Vogel Orchestra FAQs

Should I buy or rent an instrument?

We recommend you rent an instrument for a few reasons. Firstly, orchestra instruments come in different sizes. As your student grows physically, they will need to change from a smaller instrument to a larger instrument. For example, if your student needs a ½ cello this year, it is very likely next year they might have grown to where they need a ¾ cello.

Renting from a violin shop includes perks like free size upgrades, free replacement strings, etc.

Where should I rent from?

Please visit one of the local violin shops to rent a quality instrument. Examples of shops Vogel Orchestra works closely with: Lisle Violin, H&H Music, and Fishburn Violin Shop. Representatives from these stores come to Vogel weekly to take care of supplies, instrument repairs, replace broken strings, and can even exchange your student's instrument for a larger size without you having to go to the music shop!

Please note, instruments from online retailers are usually made of plastic or another toy-like quality (instead of wood) and can make playing, tuning, and maintenance very hard and not enjoyable for your student.

What if I can't afford to rent?

Please do not let finances stop you from participating in orchestra! Vogel Intermediate offers the opportunity for students to borrow a school instrument for the school year. Please contact me if this would be helpful for your family!

What is the time commitment for orchestra?

Orchestra classes are during school, and they count as your student's Fine Arts Elective. Students will come to orchestra class for 35 minutes each day. Students are also required to practice outside of school.

Will I have to bring my instrument back and forth to school?

Violinists and violists are required to bring their instruments to school each day. Cellos and basses will be provided school instruments to use during orchestra class.

Can I sign up for private lessons?

Yes, private lessons are encouraged because it gives musicians one-on-one instruction with a private instructor! Private lesson students are able to receive extra help and/or continue to advance musically in repertoire and technique.

Which instrument is the best to play?

The instrument that is best for your student will be the instrument they enjoy the best!

How do I know what size instrument to rent?

Orchestra instruments are not one-size-fits all. When you come in for Instrument Day, I will help you select the instrument size that is best for you!
